The rugged Santa Lucia Mountain Range separates the lush Salinas Valley from the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean. In 1991, the 18-mile long strip of southeastern-facing alluvial fans was recognized as the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. The combination of sandy loam soil, marine climate, elevation, foggy mornings and breezy afternoons make the site ideal for cool-climate varietals.
Recently the region has gained a great deal of attention for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. John Winthrop Haeger’s North American Pinot Noir states the reason the region is emerging- “as an area of great promise for pinot noir can be credited mostly to Gary Pisoni, the colorful and voluble son of a local farming family.”
