Pinot Noir

CLOSE

Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands is complex, aromatic and intensely flavored. The wind and mountainous soils thicken and toughen the grape skins, darkening the color in what is otherwise a lightly hued wine. Winemaking techniques for the Pinot Noirs include native-yeast fermentations that reach high temperatures, hand punch-downs of the tanks, all French-oak barrel aging and minimal racking. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Lucia, Garys Vineyard Pinot Noir

Garys Vineyard Pinot Noir is hand selected from specific barrels that are then blended together to create a wine that best reflects the unique site. This vineyard produces wines of vibrant, pretty and floral aromatics with a rich, velvety texture and firm acidity. The wines drink well upon release but contain the acidity and tannins to age gracefully for several years.

Lucia Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands

Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is a blend of fruit from the Garys and Pisoni Vineyards. Usually equal parts from each vineyard, the blend combines the elegance of the grapes from the Garys Vineyard with the power of the fruit from Pisoni Vineyards. Single-vineyard wines best express a vineyard, but this blend allows us to combine qualities from each, creating an excellent wine that represents the Santa Lucia Highlands.

Chardonnay

Close

Our goal is to make a compelling and age-worthy Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands. Some of our cellar practices include very gentle handling, hand sorting the fruit, barrel fermentation and "sur lie" aging. In pursuit of the highest quality, we do not fine or filter these wines, which usually form a light sediment with aging.

Lucia, Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay

Produced entirely from Pisoni Vineyards, Lucia Chardonnay is a blend from multiple blocks, one of which is nearly 30 years old. The wine displays bright, fresh aromatics with broad structure and good acidity.

Syrah

Close

In the cool climate Santa Lucia Highlands, Syrah ripens very late and yields are kept low to ensure the variety reaches maturity Harvest typically occurs in late October or early November. The Syrah wines are distinctly cool-climate in their aromas: spicy, floral and peppery, yet very dark in color and often high in tannins from the very long growing season. These wonderful wines benefit from time in the cellar and gentle decanting.

Lucia, Garys' Vineyard Syrah

Garys' Vineyard Syrah is sourced from a small section of Syrah grapes at Garys' Vineyard and is an outstanding example of the potential of cool-climate Syrah. Always deep and very purple in color, the wines are full of berry flavors and nuances of white pepper, leather and floral notes.

Lucia, Susan's Hill Syrah

Susan's Hill Syrah, named for Gary Pisoni's sister, resides on one of the highest elevation points of Pisoni Vineyards. The top of Susan's Hill is exposed to the elements and receives a great deal of wind. The coarse, rocky soils ensure that the vines are extremely stressed. This combination of environmental factors produces some of the most intense Syrah in California.

Lucy, Rose of Pinot Noir

Close

Lucy is the little sister to Lucia. The Rosé is made by allowing the grape juice to sit on the Pinot Noir skins for a limited time. After picking up enough color, the juice is drained from the grape skins into barrels, where it ferments. The short skin contact results in a wine lighter in color and lighter on the palate. A perfect summer wine, Lucy's essence of Pinot Noir and fresh acidity allow for pairings with a variety of dishes.

One dollar of every bottle of Lucy sold is donated to breast cancer research. Lucy Rosé is also donated to breast cancer research fundraisers throughout the country.

A Tale of two Lucys
By Susan Pisoni Tavernetti

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for Lucy Millman. She was looking forward to celebrating 10 cancer-free years by participating in a 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk slated for September 2006.  But months before the event, Lucy learned that the cancer had returned.  She underwent a double mastectomy in the preceding May.  Two weeks later and still on the mend, the irrepressible woman from Evanston, Illinois, started planning a “Pink Party” to raise funds for the upcoming walk. Pink decorations. Pink ribbons. Pink food and pink drink.  Pink everything to signify support of breast cancer research.

That’s when Lucy ran into the other Lucy at her local Binny’s Beverage Depot.  Boldly scripted in bluck on a black label, the name Lucy leaped out at her from the shelf of rosé  wines.  When she and husband Gary turned the bottle around, they read that Lucia Vineyards & Winery would donate $1 from every bottle sold to breast cancer research.  “We were knocked over by the coincidence,” Lucy wrote.

The Millman’s didn’t know that Wine Enthusiast had ranked the 2006 Lucy Rosé of Pinot Noir first among all the pink wines produced in the United States, describing it as “Provencal-like, displaying waves of cherry skin, rosehip tea, strawberry, tobacco, vanilla, herb and peppery spice flavors enhanced to the pinot purity to the cool, long hangtime vintage.”

All they know was that Lucy Rosé was meant for Lucy’s fundraiser.  She and her team of five friends planned to give a Lucy bottle to anyone who donated $100 or more towards their $12,000 goal.

Mark Pisoni had just stepped in from the Vineyards when the office phone rang.  Gary Millman introduced himself and excitedly told the story of the perfect pairing.  Mark offered to donate Lucy Rosé for the party, although Gary insisted that wasn’t why he made the call.

A week later, cases of Lucy showed up on the Millman’s doorstep.  Their “Pink Party” raised more than half the target amount.  Mark followed up with a note, in which he tucked a check made out to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“We chose to support breast cancer research because of those in our lives who have been affected by this disease,” said Mark. “Lucy Millman’s story touched us, and we decided to channel the promised proceeds of Lucy sales to the Susan G. Komen foundation through her fundraising.”

Lucy Millman is in the pink again.  She completed the 2006 Breast Cancer Walk, covering 20 miles in each 3-day leg, and crossed the finish line again in 2007. Her good health, indomitable spirit and energetic fundraising efforts are truly inspirational, offering-as Charles Dickens might write-a spring of hope to those in a winter of despair.
